Engaging in music helps a person beat stress, anxiety and blood pressure and could improve sleep quality, mood and mental alertness. Adding to the list of benefits, researchers behind a recent large-scale study say that lifelong exposure to music could help boost an individual's memory and brain health in old age.

The findings of the study published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry suggest that singing and playing a musical instrument, particularly the piano, is linked to improved memory and executive function of the brain. The researchers also found greater benefits in those who continue to play the instrument into their later life.

"Keeping the brain active during life has been associated with an increased cognitive reserve, therefore reducing the risk of cognitive impairment in older age. Previous research has identified a potential relationship between musicality and cognition," the researchers wrote.

The study was part of Protect, an online study group in the U.K. that researches how healthy brains age and why people develop dementia. For the current study, researchers examined more than a thousand adults over the age of 40 to estimate the brain health benefits of playing a musical instrument and singing in a choir.

The brain health benefits of singing could also be due to the social factors of being part of a choir or group, the researchers said.

"A number of studies have looked at the effect of music on brain health. Our Protect study has given us a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between cognitive performance and music in a large cohort of older adults. Overall, we think that being musical could be a way of harnessing the brain's agility and resilience, known as cognitive reserve," Anne Corbett, professor of dementia research at the University of Exeter, said in a news release.

"Although more research is needed to investigate this relationship, our findings indicate that promoting musical education would be a valuable part of public health initiatives to promote a protective lifestyle for brain health, as would encouraging older adults to return to music in later life. There is considerable evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia, and this approach could be extended as part of a healthy aging package for older adults to enable them to proactively reduce their risk and to promote brain health," Corbett added.

World Leprosy Day: Break Stigma, Know Facts Behind Common Myths About Hansen’s Disease https://urbancare.clinic/world-leprosy-day-break-stigma-know-facts-behind-common-myths-about-hansens-disease/ Sun, 28 Jan 2024 11:05:01 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/world-leprosy-day-break-stigma-know-facts-behind-common-myths-about-hansens-disease/

Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is one of the most stigmatized diseases in the world, leaving patients feeling isolated and discriminated against even years after scientists found a cure.

Caused by Mycobacterium leprae, leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that affects the skin, nerves, eyes and nasal lining. Symptoms on the skin include lumps, swelling, ulcers, discolored patches and loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. The patients may also experience nose bleeds and stuffy noses. Nerve damage can cause numbness and weakness and may result in crippling of hands and feet, paralysis and blindness if left untreated.

Although rare, leprosy exists to this day. Approximately 208,000 people are affected by the disease worldwide, and around 100 individuals in the U.S. receive a diagnosis each year.

This World Leprosy Day, observed on the last Sunday of January every year, let us break the stigma by knowing the facts and debunking the common misconceptions about the disease.

Myth #1: Leprosy Is highly contagious

Fact: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 95% of adults can fight off the bacteria that causes leprosy.

Leprosy cannot spread through casual contact like shaking hands, sitting next to or talking to a patient but only through long-term close contact with an infectious person.

Myth #2: Leprosy Is incurable

Fact: Leprosy can be cured through a treatment that involves a combination of antibiotics. The multidrug therapy takes one to two years.

Although the treatment can cure the disease and prevent its progression, it cannot reverse nerve damage or disfigurement once formed. Hence, it is important to diagnose the disease early and seek treatment immediately.

Myth #3: Only Poor People Get Leprosy

Fact: Leprosy affects people with poor immunity. Those living in underprivileged communities are more vulnerable to leprosy, as lack of sanitation, access to clean water, nutrition and lower standards of living could affect the immune systems.

Myth #4: Leprosy Patients Need to Stay Isolated

Fact: Patients who are being treated with antibiotics can continue their normal lives and live among their family and friends.

The infection is not contagious a few days into the treatment with antibiotics. But to ensure that the infection does not return, the entire prescribed treatment should be completed.

Myth #5: Leprosy Makes A Person's Fingers and Toes Fall Off

Fact: The nerves of the digits may become numb but they do not just fall off.

In the advanced stage of the untreated disease, if the patients suffer burns or cuts to the digits and leave them untreated, it can lead to infection and permanent damage. Eventually, the body may reabsorb the digit.

Best Shoes For Plantar Fasciitis In 2024: Find Comfort And Embrace Pain-Free Steps https://urbancare.clinic/best-shoes-for-plantar-fasciitis-in-2024-find-comfort-and-embrace-pain-free-steps/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 12:04:32 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/best-shoes-for-plantar-fasciitis-in-2024-find-comfort-and-embrace-pain-free-steps/ Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition that causes inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. This condition can cause stabbing heel pain that makes every step a struggle. In such cases, finding the right shoes can be a game-changer, offering the support, cushion, and stability your feet crave. With endless options out there, choosing the perfect pair can feel like navigating a shoe labyrinth. Fear not, this guide is your map to shoe nirvana. We'll equip you with the knowledge to decipher all the features that will set you free from the clutches of plantar fasciitis pain.

Here is how you can find the right shoes:

Arch and heel support: Prioritizing shoes with ample arch support is essential to distribute pressure evenly across the foot, thereby reducing strain on the plantar fascia ligament. And, a well-constructed heel counter and adequate support play a crucial role in stabilizing the foot, effectively minimizing stress on the plantar fascia.

Cushioning: Choose shoes that offer generous cushioning, especially in the heel and forefoot regions, as this aids in shock absorption and minimizes impact on the feet. This feature contributes to alleviating the pain associated with plantar fasciitis. Additionally, opt for footwear crafted from breathable materials to enhance air circulation.

Orthotic-friendly design: Choose shoes with removable insoles or those designed to accommodate orthotic inserts for personalized support.

Prioritize comfort and lightness: Ensure a snug yet comfortable fit, avoiding tight or narrow options that may worsen discomfort. Additionally, opt for lightweight shoes to alleviate the overall burden on your feet, particularly during extended periods of wear.

Writing By Hand Or Typing On Keyboard? Study Identifies Best Way To Improve Brain Connectivity https://urbancare.clinic/writing-by-hand-or-typing-on-keyboard-study-identifies-best-way-to-improve-brain-connectivity/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 09:58:27 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/writing-by-hand-or-typing-on-keyboard-study-identifies-best-way-to-improve-brain-connectivity/

As technology advances, the traditional method of taking down notes with pen and paper is slowly losing popularity. While typing on a keyboard has become a faster and more convenient alternative, could there be a downside? Researchers have now made an interesting find: Writing by hand may boost brain connectivity compared to typing on a keyboard.

"We show that when writing by hand, brain connectivity patterns are far more elaborate than when typewriting on a keyboard. Such widespread brain connectivity is known to be crucial for memory formation and for encoding new information and, therefore, is beneficial for learning," said Professor Audrey van der Meer, co-author of the study whose findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.

To understand the effect on brain connectivity, researchers from Norway examined electroencephalogram (EEG) data from 36 university students who were repeatedly prompted to either write or type a word that appeared on a screen.

During the writing phase, they were given digital pens that allowed them to write in cursive directly on a touchscreen. While typing, the participants were asked to use a single finger to press keys on a keyboard.

The researchers noted that the connectivity of different brain regions increased when participants wrote by hand but not when they typed on a keyboard.

"Our findings suggest that the spatiotemporal pattern from visual and proprioceptive information obtained through precisely controlled hand movements when using a pen, contributes extensively to the brain's connectivity patterns that promote learning. We urge that children, from an early age, must be exposed to handwriting activities in school to establish the neuronal connectivity patterns that provide the brain with optimal conditions for learning," the researchers wrote.

Although the findings were made based on testing the participants while writing with digital pens, the researchers said they expect the same when using a real pen on paper. Since the movement of the hand while writing is behind the improved brain activity, writing in print is also expected to have similar benefits to cursive writing.

On the other hand, the simple movement of hitting a key with the same finger over and over while typing was found to be less stimulating for the brain. "This also explains why children who have learned to write and read on a tablet, can have difficulty differentiating between letters that are mirror images of each other, such as 'b' and 'd.' They literally haven't felt with their bodies what it feels like to produce those letters," van der Meer said.

Should You Put The Toilet Lid Up Or Down While Flushing? Here’s What A Study Says https://urbancare.clinic/should-you-put-the-toilet-lid-up-or-down-while-flushing-heres-what-a-study-says/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 05:44:25 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/should-you-put-the-toilet-lid-up-or-down-while-flushing-heres-what-a-study-says/

Putting the toilet lid down while flushing was considered the safest way to keep aerosolized viruses from contaminating bathroom surfaces. However, researchers behind a new study have found that it does not really matter if the lid is up or down because the only way to mitigate the risk is by disinfecting the toilet regularly.

In the study published in the American Journal of Infection Control, researchers from the University of Arizona and research firm Reckitt Benckiser noted that viral particles spread to many restroom surfaces during toilet flushing, regardless of whether the toilet lid is up or down.

"With results showing that closing toilet lids has no meaningful impact on preventing the spread of viral particles, our study highlights the importance of regular disinfection of toilets to reduce contamination and prevent the spread of viruses," senior author Charles P. Gerba from the University of Arizona said in a news release.

The research team examined the spread of viral particles during toilet flushing in both scenarios — while the lids were open and closed. The study was conducted both in household and public toilets. However, assessing the impact of lid closure was limited to household toilets since public toilets typically do not have lids.

Before flushing the toilets, they were seeded with a nonpathogenic virus as a proxy for dangerous viruses, and samples were collected from toilet bowl water and surfaces on the toilet, floor and walls.

"With the household toilet, researchers found that there was no statistical difference in the amount of virus collected from surfaces on the toilet or the nearby floor whether the toilet was flushed with the lid up or down. Viral contamination of the surrounding walls was minimal in both cases, while the toilet seat was the most contaminated surface. Similar patterns of contamination were observed with the public toilet," the news release said.

To know the effect of cleaning only with a brush versus the use of disinfectant, researchers took samples from the toilet bowl brush and its caddy. When researchers compared the levels of contamination, they noted that cleaning the toilet bowl with a disinfectant and brush significantly reduced the amount of virus found in the toilet.

"Results show that adding disinfectant to the toilet bowl before flushing or using disinfectant dispensers in the toilet tank were both effective ways to reduce contamination from flushing," the news release said.

"To reduce the risk associated with exposure to contaminated fomites in the restroom, regular disinfection of all restroom surfaces following toilet brushing, and/or use of a disinfectant that leaves residual microbicidal activity is suggested particularly when the household is occupied by an individual with an active infection with a virus, such as norovirus, causing acute gastroenteritis," the researchers wrote in the study.

Can Chocolate-Coated Insulin Pills Replace Needles? Animal Study Shows Promising Results For Diabetes Patients https://urbancare.clinic/can-chocolate-coated-insulin-pills-replace-needles-animal-study-shows-promising-results-for-diabetes-patients/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 09:38:52 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/can-chocolate-coated-insulin-pills-replace-needles-animal-study-shows-promising-results-for-diabetes-patients/

Is there a pain-free alternative to insulin shots? Good news might be on the horizon for people with diabetes, as findings of a recent animal study suggest that a swallowable insulin pill tucked in a piece of chocolate might replace painful insulin shots in the future.

Around 425 million people in the world have diabetes and 75 million of them depend on insulin injections to manage their blood sugar levels.

Scientists from the University of Tromsø (UiT) The Arctic University of Norway explored alternatives to insulin shots and developed an encapsulated pill with tiny nano-carriers of insulin designed for direct delivery to the liver.

"This way of taking insulin is more precise because it delivers the insulin rapidly to the areas of the body that need it most. When you take insulin with a syringe, it is spread throughout the body where it can cause unwanted side effects," said Peter McCourt from UiT The Arctic University of Norway, a researcher behind the study published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Unlike many medicines that can be swallowed, insulin has to be injected, as it breaks down in the stomach before it reaches the liver. However, researchers solved the hurdle by creating a protective coating that can only break down in the liver when the blood sugar levels are high.

"We have created a coating to protect the insulin from being broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes on its way through the digestive system, keeping it safe until it reaches its destination, namely the liver," McCourt explained.

"This means that when blood sugar is high, there is a rapid release of insulin, and even more importantly when blood sugar is low, no insulin is released," said Nicholas J. Hunt from the University of Sydney, a researcher who co-led the project.

"In order to make the oral insulin palatable we incorporated it into sugar-free chocolate, this approach was well received," Hunt added.

According to Hunt, the pills offer a more practical and patient-friendly method of managing diabetes and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. The technique allows the controlled release of insulin based on the patient's requirements, unlike injections where all the insulin is released in one shot.

The researchers said the pill's insulin delivery technique works similarly to how insulin works in healthy people and will have fewer side effects.

"When you inject insulin under the skin with a syringe, far more of it goes to the muscles and to adipose tissues that would normally happen if it was released from the pancreas, which can lead to the accumulation of fats. It can also lead to hypoglycemia, which can potentially be dangerous for people with diabetes. With the new method, there will be fewer such side effects. In addition, you do not need to stab yourself with a needle and you can take the medicine you need in a slightly more discreet way. Also, this form of insulin does not need to be refrigerated," the researchers said.

The oral insulin has been tested on nematodes, mice and rats that have diabetes. In a recent trial, researchers tested them on 20 healthy baboons and found them to have reduced blood sugar levels.

The human trials will begin in 2025, and researchers hope the new medicine could be available for use in two to three years.

Energy Drinks Linked To Disturbed Sleep: Study Says Even Once A Month Consumption Raises Risk https://urbancare.clinic/energy-drinks-linked-to-disturbed-sleep-study-says-even-once-a-month-consumption-raises-risk/ Tue, 23 Jan 2024 08:55:22 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/energy-drinks-linked-to-disturbed-sleep-study-says-even-once-a-month-consumption-raises-risk/

A recent large-scale study has found a link between consumption of energy drinks and disturbed sleep. The research revealed that even occasional intake, such as once a month, could affect one's quality of sleep.

Marketed as beverages that can help boost mental and physical energy, energy drinks are particularly popular among college students and young people. They contain an average caffeine content of 150 milligrams per liter along with varying quantities of sugar, vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Earlier studies have shown that energy drinks could reduce sleep quality. However, there has been limited research on how these drinks affect various aspects of sleep and the sex-specific differences in these effects.

In a recent Norwegian study published in the journal BMJ Open, researchers evaluated the impact of energy drinks on different aspects of sleep. They discovered that higher consumption was associated with an increasing risk of sleep problems, with the strongest associations with short sleep duration.

The team evaluated 53,266 participants between the ages of 18 to 35 who were part of the Students' Health and Well-being Study (SHOT22 study) — a large-scale national survey of college and university students in Norway.

The participants were asked to respond to a survey that measured the frequency of their energy drink consumption. The options included daily, weekly (once, two to three times, four to six times), monthly (one to three times) and seldom/never.

The sleep patterns of the participants were also studied through surveys that inquired about their bedtime, wake-up time, duration of falling asleep and wakefulness after going to sleep.

The researchers then calculated their sleep efficiency by comparing the total nightly hours of sleep to the time spent in bed. People were considered to be having insomnia when they reported difficulties falling and staying asleep and waking early on at least three nights of the week. Furthermore, meeting the criteria for insomnia required participants to also experience daytime sleepiness and tiredness for at least three days of the week for at least three months.

The study observed a clear sex difference in patterns of energy drink consumption. Around 50% of women reported that they never or seldom consumed energy drinks compared to 40% of men. Among those who did consume energy drinks, 5.5% of women drank them four to six times a week, whereas the figure was 8% in men. Daily consumption was reported by 3% of women and 5% of men.

"Both men and women who reported daily consumption slept around half an hour less than those reporting only occasional or no consumption. Similar associations were also observed for waking after falling asleep and taking longer to fall asleep. And increasing consumption was associated with a corresponding increase in both nocturnal wake time and time taken to fall asleep — poorer sleep efficiency," the news release said.

"Insomnia was also more common among both women and men reporting daily consumption than among those reporting occasional or no consumption: 51% vs 33% (women) and 37% vs 22% (men)."

Men who reported daily intake of energy drinks were over twice as likely to sleep fewer than six hours per night compared to those reporting no or only an occasional intake. Meanwhile, women with daily intake were 87% more likely to do so. The study noted that people who take energy drinks just one to three times a month were still at heightened risk of sleep problems.

Since the study is observational, definitive conclusions about causation cannot be made based on the findings. The researchers acknowledge the possibility of reverse causality, suggesting that energy drink consumption might be a consequence of poor sleep.

The study has not taken into account details such as the timing and exact quantities of energy drink consumption. Both patterns of consumption and sleep were measured based on self-reported surveys.

However, researchers conclude that "there is a robust association between the frequency of [energy drink] consumption and the different sleep parameters."

"Identifying modifiable risk factors for sleep problems among college and university students is vital and our results suggest that the frequency of ...consumption could be a possible target for interventions," they added.

A recent study that evaluated the health effects of energy drinks identified a series of issues, including disrupted sleep, depression, suicide, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety among children and young people.

What Happens To Your Body In Extreme Cold? Know Hypothermia Signs, Treatments https://urbancare.clinic/what-happens-to-your-body-in-extreme-cold-know-hypothermia-signs-treatments/ Fri, 19 Jan 2024 08:33:09 +0000 https://urbancare.clinic/what-happens-to-your-body-in-extreme-cold-know-hypothermia-signs-treatments/

As the temperature goes below freezing in many parts of the country, it is important to know the risk of hypothermia, a dangerous condition caused by exposure to extremely cold climates that may lead to organ failure and even death.

Around 1,300 people in the U.S. die of hypothermia every year. Hypothermia occurs when the human body can no longer produce enough heat for the proper functioning of the systems. The core body temperature falls below 35 degrees Celsius during the state.

It can be triggered by prolonged exposure to cold weather or immersion in cold water, certain medications and underlying pathological conditions.

What Happens During Hypothermia

When the core body temperature drops, it affects the functioning of the heart, nervous system and other organs. If not treated promptly, hypothermia can progress to complete heart failure, failure of the respiratory system and eventually death.

Complications may also include frostbite, which occurs when the body tissues — particularly in the exposed areas like the nose, hands, toes and cheeks — get frozen. If not treated right away, hypothermia can lead to gangrene, causing permanent tissue damage that may require amputation of the affected body part.

Elderly people, young children, unhoused individuals and those taking part in cold-weather sports are particularly at risk of hypothermia.

Signs of Hypothermia

The first sign of hypothermia is shivering, which is the body's natural defense mechanism to bring back the core temperature. Other signs include slurred speech, shallow breathing, weak pulse, poor coordination, confusion, memory loss, bright red skin and loss of consciousness.

Prevention and Treatment

One can prevent hypothermia by minimizing exposure to cold temperatures. The complications can be mitigated by seeking treatment when the symptoms begin.

A person who experiences mild hypothermia can feel better with first aid before they get medical assistance. Removing their cold wet clothes, moving them to a warmer dry shelter and offering extra clothing, warm blankets and warm liquids can help them recover. However, if a person turns unconscious, it is important to seek immediate medical attention.

Advanced hypothermia is treated at the hospital with techniques such as blood rewarming using a hemodialysis machine, providing warmed IV fluids and airway rewarming.
